Applying and Building the Science of Dissemination and Implementation:
Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Dissemination and Implementation Research

Vision

  • to advance the field of dissemination and implementation research and to offer concrete assistance to narrow the gap between health research, practice and policy, especially as they apply to reducing health disparities
  • We pursue this vision by partnering with organizations and on projects targeting disparities in health and health care among racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, health literacy, and geopolitical populations and offering tools and technical assistance at the planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting stages for interventions.

Convergence of Diffusion and Social Marketing Concepts to Disseminate Evidence-Based
Public Health Practices

Presented by: Drs. James W. Dearing and Ed Maibach, 2007
Description: Why can these two change models be usefully combined?

  • Different assumptions
  • Different literatures
  • Different practice settings but
  • Similar objectives and complementary concepts

Designing for Diffusion
Presented by: James W. Dearing, 2008
Descripton: Design is a coordinated set of evaluation-based activities that

  • lead to the creation of “push” strategies on the basis of
  • eliciting predisposing psychological and sociological “pull” motivations for change

Designing for Dissemination and Implementation.
Presented by: Dr James W. Dearing, 2008
Description: Design is a coordinated set of evaluation-based activities that:

  • lead to the creation of D&I “push” strategies on the basis of
  • eliciting predisposing psychological and sociological “pull” or intrinsic motivations
    for change

Factors to Consider Before Spreading an Innovation Inside or Outside Your Facility
Presented by: Dr. James W. Dearing, 2008
Description: Innovations spread because of 3 factors

  • What potential adopters think about the innovation
  • What potential adopters think others think about the innovation
  • Windows of opportunity

IMPLEMENTING 21ST CENTURY WELL CHILD CARE IN AN HMO - Poster
Presented by: Arne Beck, PhD, David Bergman, MD Alanna Kulchak Rahm, MS, James W Dearing, PhD,
Russell E. Glasgow, PhD, January 2009
We describe a theory and evidence-based process for implementing developmental and preventive services for children. Twenty first Century Well Child Care (WCC) is a parent-centered, multidisciplinary team-based model combining online pre-visit child assessments with in-office well child visits of varying length. Parents complete pre-visit assessments using the Child Health and Development Interactive System (CHADIS), a web-based screening and assessment tool.

Strategies and Tools for Improving Dissemination in Kaiser Permanente.
Presented by: Dr James W. Dearing, 2007

The Trouble With Dissemination
Presented by: Dr. James W. Dearing, 2008
Description:Common Mistakes in Attempting Dissemination

  • Evidence is over over-emphasized
  • Innovations are introduced prematurely
  • Information is over over-used; influence is under under-used
  • Under-use of marketing science formative evaluation
  • Self-selection is a primary means by which potential adopters are introduced to innovations
  • When self-selection is not used, authority and status are used
  • Experimental demonstrations are confused with exemplary demonstrations
  • Broader timing (social issue environment) is ignored
  • Adaptations are assumed to detract from effectiveness
    and thus are discouraged
